Yoga for PCOS
Polycystic Ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is a condition caused through a hormonal imbalance, where androgens (hormones) are increased and progesterone (female hormone) is lowered. The increase in androgens leads to an increase in testosterone produced in the body.
Because the condition changes the balance of your hormones, it effects the ovaries and their egg production – resulting in reduced or absent ovulation, irregular or ceased periods and small, benign cysts on the ovaries. PCOS also causes higher levels of insulin in the body, which often causes the increase in androgens. This condition affects 7-10% of women and is a very common menstrual disorder. It can make it hard to maintain weight and increase your risk of diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure and premature hair loss.
Because your ovaries are not producing eggs, it can also make it very difficult to become pregnant.
One of the best ways to combat PCOS is to reduce your weight. This can be done with dietary changes; reducing or eliminating sugar and eating wholegrain foods. Yoga is also excellent. Yoga rebalances the hormone levels in the body and can normalise insulin production, therefore reducing the androgens and encouraging egg production. Great poses includes backbends, inversions and sun salutations.
I have included here a sun salutation for weight loss, based on Astanga Yoga- which is excellent for the cardiovascular system.(Be aware I originally uploaded this for new mums and baby weight).
Take it easy if you’re new to yoga, its quite a dynamic sequence. Over the next couple of months I will upload a more comprehensive yoga video specifically for PCOS. In the meantime, enjoy!
